Transition Goals, Plans, Success (Transition GPS)

What is Transition GPS?

Transition GPS is a redesigned transition assistance program that ensures service members and their families are well prepared for civilian life. The program provides extensive tools, education and support needed for a successful transition from military service to the civilian community.

In the Transition GPS program, service members and their families will assess what interests them the most in the workplace and learn how to increase their marketability so they may obtain a job in their ideal career field.

Transition services are designed to make the move to civilian life smooth and successful. For more information, visit www.cnic.navy.mil/TransitionGPS. Active duty, please sign up through your Command Career Counselor. For questions, contact Fleet & Family Support at 360-257-6289.

Transition GPS

This 5-day curriculum ensures service members are adequately prepared for civilian life by meeting specific Career Readiness Standards (CRS) during their transition process. Participants will depart the military “career ready” and with strategies that augment the job search process in today's market.

When to attend?
Active duty members may attend Transition GPS 12 months prior to separation or 24 months prior to retirement, and is required no later than 90 days prior to separation.
* Please refer to “Plain Talk for Sailors” for your complete Transition Countdown.

Pre-separation Counseling (Prerequisite to the 5-day Workshop)

The first step in the transition process is pre-separation counseling. During this counseling, given by the service member’s Command Career Counselor, service members will complete VA eBenefits registration, discuss documents needed for Transition GPS, receive the Individual Transition Plan (ITP) paperwork and ITP Checklist DD Form 2958, and Pre-separation Counseling checklist DD Form 2648, which is to be signed by the service member and the Command Career Counselor prior to the 5-day Transition GPS workshop.

Accessing Higher Education

This 2-day workshop is designed to help those thinking about going to college get all of the information they need to make the best decisions for their goals and their family. Participants will research institutes of higher learning and their various degree options. Common questions and concerns like how many classes are required to complete a degree or certificate, pros and cons of online or on-campus, the number of military credits that can be transferred, the total cost of the program to the Service Member — as well as GI Bill, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), loans, grants and scholarships are all discussed. For example, does the college offer a Health Sciences major and Nutrition minor? Are GI Bill benefits the same for online and part time students? Does the university have a Student Veteran's of America chapter? Participants will leave with a better understanding of the resources available to them throughout the college process from admission to graduation.

Recommended for students to bring:

Career Technical Training

This 2-day workshop is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in a trade or technical field or enrollment in an apprenticeship program. Similar to the Accessing Higher Education Track, this course guides participants to select an occupational industry and evaluate their needs. Workforce expectations such as general salary averages, job growth in today's economy and best geographic locations for each vocation are discussed. Participants select Technical Schools to compare several factors: number of credits needed for completion, credit transfers, licensure requirements, time it takes to complete the program, tuition costs and fees, GI Bill acceptance and admission standards. At the end of the two day course, participants should leave with a clear understanding of what they need to do to reach their technical or vocational career goals, as well as what they can expect in their chosen industry.

Recommended for students to bring:

Entrepreneurship

This 2-day workshop is for those interested in self-employment. After a self-assessment, attendees will outline a detailed business plan with the assistance and guidance of the Small Business Administration and its partners. This plan covers basic foundations like describing the business and describing the customer. Attendees research potential competition, find suppliers and office space, and consider technological needs, all with the help of experienced small business owners. Attendees will also review marketing strategies, finances, taxes, and legal issues. At the end of the course, those interested in more intensive levels of training and business planning may access the Small Business Administration's 8-week online course.

Recommended for students to bring:

Capstone

Capstone is the final step of the transition process and is mandatory. This event evaluates preparedness to successfully transition from a military to civilian career and to validate that CRS are met. If additional assistance is needed, transition staff will provide a warm handover to the appropriate partner agency or local resource (i.e. Department of Labor, Veterans Affairs, WorkSource, etc.).

When to attend?
Attend only after completing Pre-separation Counseling and the Transition GPS 5-day workshop. Service members are required to complete the Capstone event no later than 90 days before separation.

Recommended for students to bring:

  • DD Form 2958 (Returned to the service member the last day of Transition GPS 5-day Workshop)
  • Transition GPS Certificate of Completion
  • Completed ITP Block 1 & ITP Block 2
  • Prepared 12-month post-separation budget (Financial Planning Worksheet)
  • Proof of eBenefits registration (non-CAC login)
  • Completed Gap Analysis
  • Licensure, certification and apprenticeship documentation if applicable
  • Completed job application package: resume, references, and two completed job applications or a job offer letter
  • Department of Labor Gold Card
  • Copy of completed “assessment tool” such as O*Net or Kuder Assessment

* Transition consultants go over each of these items in depth during the 5-day Transition GPS workshop.
